Why Copycat Wedding Cakes Aren’t for Me (And What It Means for Your Cake)
Your cake says more about you than you might think.
In recent years, weddings have become more personalised than ever, and couples want cakes that reflect their style and story - not just the latest trends or popular Instagram designs. That’s why I don’t do copycat cakes. Each cake I create is designed specifically for the couple I’m working with, taking inspiration from their vision, personalities, and the atmosphere of their day. This approach ensures your wedding cake isn’t just beautiful - it’s meaningful, unique, and memorable.
What Is a Copycat Wedding Cake?
A copycat cake is usually a near-identical recreation of a cake seen on Pinterest, Instagram, or at another wedding. Often, couples come across an image they love and ask for the same design to be replicated exactly.
It’s completely understandable. Social media is full of beautiful cakes, and it can be hard to imagine something different when that image feels “perfect”. But what works for one couple, venue, or setting doesn’t always translate in the same way for another.
“Originality isn’t optional. It’s essential.”
Why I Choose Not to Recreate Existing Designs
Designing a wedding cake isn’t about copying shapes or textures. It’s about understanding the couple, the setting, and how everything comes together on the day.
When a cake is copied exactly, important details can be lost. Things like your colour palette, your venue style, the season, and even how the cake will be displayed all play a part in the final design. A bespoke approach allows all of these elements to be considered properly, rather than forcing a design to fit where it doesn’t quite belong.
It also allows me to do my best work. Creativity, craftsmanship, and attention to detail are at the heart of what I do, and that’s where truly beautiful, thoughtful cakes come from.
What “Inspired By” Really Means
Not doing copycat cakes doesn’t mean starting from scratch with no reference at all. Inspiration is an important part of the process.
You might be drawn to a particular shape, texture, or overall feel from a cake you’ve seen. That’s incredibly helpful. From there, we can take those elements and interpret them in a way that works for your wedding, rather than recreating someone else’s design line by line.
This approach keeps the cake feeling original, intentional, and personal.
Why Original Designs Benefit You as a Couple
A bespoke design gives you a cake that feels like it belongs to your day. It reflects your choices, your tastes, and the overall mood you’re creating.
It also means your cake photographs beautifully in context, rather than feeling disconnected from the rest of the styling. Most importantly, it becomes part of your memories, not a repeat of someone else’s.
Many couples tell me they feel more relaxed knowing their cake has been designed specifically for them, rather than trying to live up to an image that might not translate exactly in real life.
How This Fits Into the Bigger Picture
Choosing a bespoke design also ties into other decisions, such as portion sizes, structure, and budget. For example, thoughtful design choices might involve using dummy tiers for visual impact, or adjusting the size of the cake to suit your guest numbers without compromising the overall look.

Final Thoughts
Saying no to copycat cakes isn’t about limitation. It’s about intention. It allows space to design something that feels considered, personal, and genuinely aligned with your wedding.
Your cake doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s to be beautiful. It just needs to feel right for you.
