My cake journey started out as a young girl obsessed with sweet treats. I learned to make my favourite bakes mainly so that I could fuel this obsession by whipping them up whenever I wanted. Over time, friends and family started to comment on my cakes and suggested several times that I should start up a business. They were very flattering comments but a lack of confidence prevented me from pursuing it any further. The more I baked, the more positive comments I received, so instead of diving in head first, I decided to dip my toes in to test the water. I started up a free website where I could upload images of my cakes and named the site Love & Cakes.
When I was asked to make my friends wedding cake, that was the ultimate achievement for me and the moment when I believed that I could actually do this. What had been holding me back for so long was a lack of confidence and skill, but I thought how many successful people are out there without professional training and qualifications that are very good at what they do? Why should I be any different? Boosted with a bit of self-belief, I got serious about baking and renamed my business Beez Cakes in 2013.
I work from my home kitchen which is small but clean and efficient. I am very house proud and was elated when I received a level 5 from the Food Standards Agency for my workspace. When my customers purchase cakes from me, they can have full confidence that their cake was made with love from a baker with high standards.
My favourite thing to make is happy people. That is what spurs me on when I bake. Apart from that, I love to make Victoria sponge cakes because its such a classic. It’s so easy to make and tastes delicious.
Most of my inspiration comes from a love of the vintage era, particularly the 1920s - 1950s. Everything was so classic and elegant which is a style that really appeals to me and which is seen throughout my cake designs.
To relax, I like to spend time with friends and family. I also love watching a certain celebrity judge on tv and enjoy learning from other cake bakers and decorators such as Mich Turner, Peggy Porschen, Rosalind Miller, Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium, Alan Dunn and Buddy Valastro to name a few. Much to my husband’s dismay, I could literally watch baking and cake decorating programs all day!
I love talking about cake and baking, but its also great to see how far a bit of confidence and self belief can take you. I hope you have enjoyed this post and getting to know not just the face, but the person behind Beez Cakes.
