What an experience! Being chosen as one of the finalists for the Royal Wedding Cake Competition at the Ideal Home Show was a privilege and one of many personal achievements. Although not for the actual wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the idea itself was fun and really got people excited and talking about the big day.
The cakes on show were fabulous and although my cake didn’t win, it was great to be among fellow cake decorators who share my passion. It was a wonderful way to challenge myself, but to also encourage and be encouraged by other cake decorators.

If you were unable to attend the Ideal Home Show to see the cake finalists, the brief was to design a cake that would be fit for the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan. There were many different interpretations in the final cakes, and I am going to share my inspiration and thoughts behind my cake design.
Prince Harry and Meghan seem like a very down-to-earth couple, not too showy, or seen to take themselves too seriously. They like to have fun and you can see that they really care for each other. Meghan is a beautiful woman with a sophisticated, classy style which is understated but very elegant. These observations were just some of what I wanted to incorporate into my design. I wanted it to convey a mix of traditional and modern, classic and elegant.
To achieve this, I chose to do the cake in a soft ivory colour for a slight change from the traditional white, and decorated the top and middle tiers with hand made sugar roses. I love roses! They are simply beautiful and the perfect symbol of love and romance. The gold swags were a nod to everything royal, regal and traditional. The square base represents a solid foundation, which all successful marriages are based on, and an effective contrast with the soft round tiers above it.
I was extremely happy with how my design turned out, but especially with the response I got from those who had seen my cake at the Ideal Home Show and on social media. It’s always good to get feedback from those who love cake and appreciate this art form. Looking forward to the next opportunity I get to showcase my work like this again.
