Looking for something sweet for your wedding? Deliberating whether to serve up something shop bought or home-baked? Well, look no further because I am going to give you five good reasons why your wedding cake should be home-baked.
1. Design Control
Your cake can be anything you want it to be (within reason). If you can think it and your cake maker can do it, then you can have it! You want each tier a different flavour? Done. You want the cake to tower over you and your guests? No problem. You want flowers cascading from top to bottom? You got it.
The design of your cake is completely up to you. The freedom you have in designing your cake and the joy that comes from doing so is super exciting! While you may be able to tweak a shop bought cake to your preference, do you have complete control over it’s appearance, flavour and any extras? No, not usually.
2. Flavour
This should really be at the top of the list. Flavour is everything! Actually, flavour and design go hand in hand. If the cake looks good, you’ll want to eat it, but if the flavour is disgusting, it doesn’t matter how good the cake looks, it will not go down well with you or your guests. How many times have you bought a shop bought cake and realised it was money not well spent? With a home-baked cake you can sample your chosen cake flavours before parting with your money. There are so many cake flavours to choose from - the classics including vanilla, chocolate and lemon, or the not so obvious like white chocolate and raspberry, strawberry champagne or mojito! Which camp are you? Team classic, or daring?
3. Quality Ingredients
Most, well all stores are there to make a profit, but your average home baker probably doesn’t pay themselves as well as the CEO of these companies because they do what they do, mainly for the love of it. This is why good cake makers will source quality (not cheap) ingredients. I always use free range eggs, fair trade and fresh ingredients whenever possible, and that is what you can (and should) expect for your home-baked cake. Can that be said for shop bought cakes along with the additives and powder form ingredients that are used to keep their cakes fresh?
4. As Unique As You Are
Only you and your spouse-to-be (and perhaps those close to you) will know why you want a snowy mountain cake topper or a novelty cake of your pet dog with you both at the seaside, but that is the beauty of having a home-baked, customised cake. As mentioned before, you get to personalise your cake in a way that a shop bought cake cannot. It will mean something special to you both and add to the occasion by making your cake unique to you.
5. Attention
The care and attention your cake will receive leading up to your big day and upon delivery cannot be compared to shop bought cakes. I have seen first hand the way that some cakes from well-known stores have been delivered and I can tell you it left much to be desired.
Your home-baked cake will receive the utmost care because if your cake maker is anything like me, they will take pride in their work. That pride along with the desire to want to make your customers happy will ensure that your cake looks exactly how you pictured it and taste exactly how you remember it.
There you have it! Five very valid, straight to the point reasons why your wedding cake should be home baked. If this isn’t reason enough, I don’t know what is. :)
