As cupcakes become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional cakes, more couples are choosing to display a mixture of sweet treats (including cupcakes) on a dessert table. Cupcakes are commonly viewed as being more affordable than a wedding cake, but is that really the case? Are cupcakes cheaper than a wedding cake?
This article will discuss the differences in cost between cupcakes and wedding cakes. In addition to that, we’ll look at what factors affect the cost of each option.
Overall, cupcakes are easier to make because they are smaller, can be made in large quantities and require less decoration. A wedding cake takes more time, ingredients and effort. One factor affecting the cost of both cupcakes and wedding cakes is the time it takes to create. Cupcakes will often take less time because they are smaller, thus reducing the cost if the decoration is kept minimal.
If you plan to serve the wedding cake for dessert, you will need a cake large enough to feed all of your guests. If not, the option of having finger slices served means the wedding cake will go further. On the other hand, you may find that serving cupcakes to each of your guests is more convenient as they are easier to distribute. However, the overall cost of cupcakes for each guest may turn out not to be as cost effective as it will depend on the number of cupcakes needed to feed all of your wedding guests.
A large wedding cake with intricate details will take time and effort, but not as much as having to decorate each individual cupcake. If you have invited 100 guests, a three tier cake can be made without adding too much time to the decoration process. Alternatively, if you chose to have 100 cupcakes, each cupcake would need to be decorated individually to the exact design. This is where a wedding cake may be more cost effective.
At first glance, the answer to ‘are cupcakes cheaper than a wedding cake?’ may seem clear cut. Yet, it really depends on what you want to achieve. Remember that small doesn’t always equal cheaper. Creating a design on a smaller surface 50 times or more requires more time, skill and patience.
If you have opted for an intimate wedding, a few simply iced cupcakes may be sufficient for you. This will likely cost less than ordering a tiered wedding cake and possibly ending up with lots of left over.
When consulting with couples, I always offer suggestions that will help them to make an informed decision. If you are contemplating cupcakes instead of a tiered cake, or are still unsure please get in contact using the contact form and I will be delighted to help.
